Some sessions stay with you long after the camera is packed away. This was one of them.

The studio was filled with soft evening light, a beautiful costume, and even more beautiful energy. Meila arrived with her mamma Kerry — and together, we made magic.

This was the kind of session that reminded me why I do what I do. Beautiful light. Genuine connection. A little art. A little heart.

This is part of my new Daughter series — a soulful revival of an old offering that has always held a special place in my heart. These sessions are designed to honour the essence of our young wāhine — their spirit, their movement, their emerging stories. They are about capturing connection between mother and daughter, and allowing our girls to see themselves as the radiant, powerful beings they are.

This portrait of Meila moved me deeply — as a creator, a lover, a facing, feeling, seeing photographer. It called me back to a time when I first photographed my younger sister Kiriama, creating powerful cultural portraits that are still woven into my bones to this day.

A little context behind this image…

The stunning costume Meila wore was designed by the incredible Bella Williams for a Samoan Culture / Modern Ballet Fusion piece. It was styled to beautifully honour Meila’s Samoan heritage, while allowing full freedom of movement for her dance. The feathered neckline and headpiece were lovingly handcrafted by her mum Kerry — a breathtaking homage to the essence of a Samoan Princess.

There was so much meaning layered into this session: cultural pride, movement, motherhood, legacy, and the pure joy of self-expression.

And Meila — don’t forget what I told you: "Already famous — signed yourself." 😄💋
